Material We Use

  • Water Hyacinth: A free-floating aquatic plant found abundantly in Assam, North Eastern India, known locally as Meteka. Its sustainable qualities make it ideal for crafting eco-friendly products.

  • Kauna: A type of water reed or bulrush, native to the wetlands of Manipur, a state in North Eastern India. Kauna is used to create sturdy, beautiful handicrafts.

  • Sitalpati: A traditional mat handcrafted from the soft slips of the Murta plant. Known for its cooling effect, it’s especially cherished in hot weather. Sitalpati grows abundantly in Assam and West Bengal.

  • Sabai Grass: A perennial plant that thrives in the Eastern Indian state of Orissa. Sabai grass is harvested sustainably and plays a key role in creating durable products.

  • Cane (Rattan): A natural material produced from the rattan palm, it is grown widely in Assam and is known for its strength and versatility in making furniture and other crafts.

  • Bamboo: One of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, bamboo resembles wood but is technically grass. Found abundantly in Assam, bamboo is used in a wide range of eco-friendly products.

Assam is rich in natural, perennial fibers, but its handicraft products have yet to gain global recognition due to a lack of disciplined marketing. At Shilpstory, we aim to showcase Assam’s eco-friendly, sustainable products on the international stage by participating in fairs worldwide. Our efforts will generate foreign exchange and provide sustainable livelihoods to local artisans Assam.
